VolleyDogs win Aurora Invitational

The varsity VolleyDogs travelled to the Aurora Invitational Tournament on Sept. 17.
Two pools of three teams would compete in cross-pool play.  ElDo defeated Aurora varsity 25-15 and 25-20 in the first round of pool play.

“The girls came out very relaxed.  They played well and had a lot of fun.  It was completely opposite of how we started the past weekend at Branson,” Coach Tonya Hooper stated.

The second match of pool play brought ElDo a second victory as they defeated Aurora JV 25-10 and 25-18.

“I was proud of the girls for playing consistent during the Aurora JV match.  The girls didn’t play down to the level of their competition like they had earlier in the week.  Getting intense and remaining intense is something we are working on,” said Coach Hooper.

Mt. Vernon was ElDo’s final opponent  in pool play.  ElDo finished with a 6-0 record beating Mt. Vernon 25-15 and 25-21.

“The girls played well against Mt. Vernon,” Coach Hooper said.  “We had to stop a couple of big hitters and then find holes in Mt. Vernon’s defense to win.”

ElDo earned the #2 seed behind Pembroke Hill and received a bye in the first round of tournament play.  Mt. Vernon defeated Galena to advance to the semifinals against ElDo.
The VolleyDogs played a close match against Mt. Vernon before winning the match 25-22 and 25-23 to advance to the championship.

Coach Hooper commented, “Mt. Vernon’s middle hitter got some big hits down on us and lifted her team up during the semifinals.  The girls responded with some big hits of their own to beat Mt. Vernon twice in the same day.  That is not an easy task..”
ElDo then advanced to the finals against a tall and very athletic Pembroke Hill team.

“I had watched them play earlier in the day and was wondering how we would match up against them.  I’m not going to lie, I was concerned,” remarked Coach Hooper.  “Pembroke Hill had some amazing hitters and played very scrappy defense.  We would have to hit a little better and play a little harder than them to win the match.”

The VolleyDogs took to the challenge, playing one of their best matches of the season.  ElDo would take the championship match in three sets 26-24, 21-25, and 25-20.

“It was such an exciting match,” said Coach Hooper.  “We had a great crowd supporting us.  The girls were hungry for a tournament championship.  It was a good day for ElDo volleyball.”

Tournament stats include:  Kaili Simmons had 34 kills, one service ace, 46 digs, three assists, two solo blocks, seven block assists and 46 digs;  Alexa Schaaf had 18 kills, five service aces, two block assists and 26 digs; Taylor Alumbaugh had 18 kills, two service aces, eight solo blocks, eight block assists and 25 digs; Payton Hallford had 26 kills, four service aces, 10 solo blocks, 14 block assists and nine digs; Sara Jennings had five kills, six service aces, one solo block, four block assists, 82 assists and 15 digs; Brooke Stacy had five kills, one solo block, nine block assists, seven assists, and 21 digs;  Kate Sibley had 10 digs; Lakyn Coleman had one service ace.

Seniors Taylor Alumbaugh and Sara Jennings were selected to the Aurora All-Tournament Team.

MET AT THE NET

Kaili Simmons (No. 4), outside hitter for the El Dorado Springs Volley Dogs, met Erica Frieden, middle hitter for Lamar at the net as  Payton Hallford (No. 15) middle hitter for the Volley Dogs stood ready to assist.

OVERRULED

Volley Dog Outside Hitter Alexa Schaaf (No.12) takes a good set from her teammate and puts it back to the Lamar side of the net  overruling  the objections of two Tigers.

JV TEAM WORK

During the JV match with Lamar last Thursday, Morgan Sumner (No. 5) set the ball as Middle Hitter Emily Ford (No. 42) and Outsider Hitter Sydney Robertson get ready to play their part.

ElDo Volleydogs have great week

The El Dorado Springs VolleyDogs improved their records significantly the past week.  On Sept. 13, ElDo hosted Pleasant Hope.

An unofficial C-match was held against Pleasant Hope.  Taylor North had four kills while Emily Ford and Hannah Robertson each earned three kills on the evening.  Kristen Lackey and Morgan combined for 10 assists.  Sydney Robertson had one dig.

The JV team easily defeated Pleasant Hope 25-17 and 25-12.  Courtney Hooper led all JV hitters with five kills followed by Megan Chism with four.  Madi Sibley had eight assists and Angel Ferguson had four.  Sibley led her team in service aces with six followed by Lakyn Coleman with three.

Coach Gwyn Osborne commented, “We got to play our first C match of the year against Pleasant Hope.  The girls came out and played well.  It was a good start to our C season.  The JV came out and did the same thing.”

The varsity team came out sharp and defeated Pleasant Hope quickly in the first set 25-8.  Pleasant Hope fought back in set two challenging ElDo multiple times before ElDo ended the match winning 25-21.

“We had a hard time focusing after beating Pleasant Hope so easily in the first set,” said Coach Tonya Hooper.  “The girls relaxed a little too much allowing them to play with us.”

Alexa Schaaf led all hitters with eight kills followed by Taylor Alumbaugh with seven.   Payton Hallford earned three solo blocks and three block assists while Alumbaugh had five solo blocks and one block assist.  Kaili Simmons had 19 digs on the evening and Sara Jennings had 24 assists.

ElDo then hosted Lamar on Sept. 15.  The JV swept Lamar in two sets 25-9 and 25-15.  Coach Osborne was able to go deep into the bench during the match.  Lakyn Coleman and Courtney Hooper led the hitters with three kills each.  Madi Sibley had four assists on the night.  Fallyn Ozbun had six service aces.

“Thursday night, we continued our perfect season with a win over Lamar. We came out a little flat and lacking some intensity, but in the end we came out ahead and that’s what counts,” said Coach Osborne.  The JV record improved to 5-0.
The varsity VolleyDogs then stepped to the floor and defeated Lamar in two sets 25-16 and 25-17.

“It wasn’t our prettiest match of the season, but it was a win against a district opponent which is very important,” commented Coach Hooper.

Taylor Alumbaugh led ElDo hitters with seven kills followed by Kaili Simmons with six and Payton Hallford with five.  Sara Jennings had seven assists and Brooke Stacy had seven.  Stacy led the team defensively with eight digs.  Jennings and Simmons added seven each.  Hallford led the team in blocking with two solo blocks and four block assists.  Alumbaugh added one solo block and two block assists.  Simmons and Alexa Schaaf had two service aces each.

ElDo played at Miller on Sept. 19 and Bolivar on Sept. 20 before traveling to Warsaw on Sept. 22.  The VolleyDogs return home on Sept. 26 with a C-match starting at 5:00 p.m. against Liberal.  ElDo will host a Black Out Night on Sept. 29 against Nevada.

Middle School VolleyDogs open season on the road

The El Dorado Springs Middle School 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams traveled to Bolivar for their season opener Sept. 12.

The 7th graders fell short losing 8-25, 12-25. The 8th grade team faired slightly better needing three games to claim the victory (25-11, 19-25, 25-15).

Coach Jeanie Meyers stated, “I saw some really good things during the 7th grade. I also saw some weak spots, but I was really proud of the girls for doing their best and overcoming their nerves.”

Haley Wise led the team with three service aces. Anyssa Salazar and Madison Noakes added two each. DeOnna Walker had one kill.

Coaches Beau Swopes and Jeanie Meyers were pleased with the overall outcome of the 8th grade game as well.

“The girls came out strong in the first game. They lost some focus in the 2nd game and made some unforced errors, but we were impressed that they were able to come back in the 3rd game to seal the victory.”

Kinli Simmons led the team with eight service aces, while Kameron Schaaf added five and Olivia Hallford chipped in three. Simmons and Hallford provided four assists apiece and Schaaf added three. Schaaf and Simmons also provided five kills apiece while Becky Jennings and Cameron McPeak had one each.

The 2nd game of the season led the teams to Lamar.

The 7th grade showed big improvements from their first game, but still came up short losing 16-25, 13-25. The 8th grade moved to 2-0 with scores of 25-18, 25-13 and a 25-10 B game.

Coach Meyers said, “The confidence level of the 7th grade was a lot better against Lamar. They also missed less serves and returned more balls.” DeOnna Walker led the team with five service aces, all in game two. Anyssa Salazar and Madison Noakes each contributed two of their own. Tori Spencer had one kill.

“I was very proud of the 8th grade for playing strong the entire game. Our defense really stepped up by limiting the number of balls that hit the floor and providing passes that fueled an effective offense,” Coach Meyers said.

Kameron Schaaf led the team with five service aces. Kinli Simmons led with five assists and Olivia Hallford added three. Schaaf contributed five kills. Simmons and Hallford added three apiece while Cameron McPeak chipped in with two.

ElDo Middle School Bulldog Football teams 1-1

The 7th and 8th grade Bulldog Football teams opened their season on Thursday, Sept. 8, on the road against the Bolivar Liberators.

The 7th grade found themselves outsized and outnumbered as they took the field, but fought to the end and never gave up. The Bulldogs went into halftime down 24-0. After making some adjustments both offensively and defensively the Bulldogs came out in the second half and started moving the ball and only allowed one more score to make the final score 30-0.

The 8th grade Bulldogs had revenge on their mind. Last year they lost by two points on the last play of the game to the Liberators so they were ready to get the bad taste out of their mouth.

The Bulldogs got the ball to start the game and marched right down the field only to turn the ball over by throwing an interception in the end zone. After battling back and forth for most of the 1st half the Liberators finally struck first with a score halfway through the second quarter. The Bulldogs went into halftime down 8-0.

The Liberators scored again in the 3rd quarter and completed the two point conversion to make it 16-0. Then the Bulldogs got on the board with a five-yard touchdown run by quarterback, Jakob Studer, the two-point conversion failed. The Bulldog defense continued to hold the Liberator offense and then got the break they needed when free safety Lance Molz intercepted a pass and returned it 80 yards for an apparent touchdown that was called back due to a Bulldog penalty. The Bulldogs still had good field position but could not score. Time eventually ran out on the Bulldogs and the game ended with a final score of 16-6.

On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Bulldogs hosted the Warsaw Wildcats. Both teams were looking to get back on the winning track and they did just that.

The 7th grade started the night off right with a 14-0 win. The first score was set up by a 25-yard pass from quarterback Riley Boyd to tight end Colton Svendsen who was tackled on the 3 yard line. Running back Jonathan Ramsey punched the ball in for six points and Riley Boyd completed the two-point conversion to put the Bulldogs up 8-0.
This was the score at the end of the first half.

The Bulldog defense started the second half and continued to play strong forcing the Wildcats to turn the ball over on downs. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs struck again on a long touchdown run by running back Dayton Austin to put the Bulldogs up 14-0. That was the final score of the game and the 7th grade Bulldogs got their first win of the season.

Contributing to an outstanding defensive effort were Austin Swartz with five solo tackles, Colton Svendsen with three solos and Johnathon Ramsey had one QB sack.
The 8th grade Bulldogs took the momentum the 7th grade had established and ran with it. The 8th grade had the offense rolling as they won 40-8.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the 1st quarter on a 23-yard run by running back Cody Long and a 30 yard run by Lance Molz. Jakob Studer scored both two-point conversions to give the Bulldogs a 16-0 lead.

They took this lead into halftime and then built on it the entire second half. Running back Lance Molz had another touchdown run of 40 yards in the 3rd quarter. The successful two point conversion gave the Bulldogs a 24-0 lead.

The Bulldog defense forced the Wildcats to punt late in the 3rd quarter and it was blocked by Landen Smith then picked up by Jakob Studer and returned for the 4th
Bulldog touchdown of the night. On the following kickoff the Wildcats returned it 80 yards for their only score of the night. The Bulldogs final score came on a 6 yd. touchdown run by Levy Smith in the 4th quarter to bring the final score to 40-0 for
the Bulldog win.

Cody Long had nine carries for 128 yards, Lance Molz had eight carries for 135 yards.
The defense was led by Tyler McNeece with nine tackles. Cody Long had eight tackles. Jakob Studer had five tackles and a QB sack.

The Bulldogs next contest was Tuesday, Sept. 20 at home versus Nevada.

HORSE PLAY

Bulldog Running Back, Brendan Fast (No. 24), escorted by Bulldog Running Back Tyler Owens (No. 23) makes some hard earned yards against the Eldon Mustangs last Friday night. Fast, normally one of the leading rushers for the Bulldogs, only carried two times and lost seven yards, before the team lost his services for several weeks with a bruised hip bone.

ALMOST

If Quarterback Garrett Mays had lofted the long pass just a little or if the Mustang defender had not jumped quite as high, Bulldog Wide Receiver Kyle McCullick (No. 11) would have had a shot at catching the home run ball with nothing but grass between him and pay dirt. McCullick had one 29-yard reception for the night for a touchdown.

Mustangs trample Bulldogs 47-14

El Dorado Springs Head Football Coach Bob Ramsey spoke with the Sun on Monday following his team’s 47-14 loss to the Eldon Mustangs made worse by the injury loss of three starters.

Coach Ramsey told the Sun: It was frustrating game. Twenty years and I haven’t been in this situation where I lost our top three kids. You lose your quarterback, your fullback and your tailback. Those guys account for most of our offense and a lot of our defense. Losing those kids really hurt in that ball game.

Q. How are they doing?

We are not going to have any back this week. They have all been to the doctor and none of them have been cleared or released yet.

The good news is: Brendan Fast did not break a bone. He just got a deep bruise on his hip which is aggravating and painful. It usually takes a while to heal.
Tanner Hixson does not have a break. He has a severe ankle sprain.

Garrett Mays had a concussion on a attempt to make a tackle. He went in and they did a CAT scan. They didn’t find anything. You have to be careful with that.

The final score was 47-14.

They are as good football team. We knew going in it was going to be a challenge. They returned 10 offensive starters and 10 defensive starters from last year. They finished the season last year being pretty competitive and were pretty excited about this being their year to win quite a few ball games. They are a big strong football team and were just able to take it to us.

Q. Their big back was fast. When he got around the end, he was gone.

He was not only 6’2” 215 - 225, but he ran very well. When you got that big ol’ body moving he was hard to tackle.

This Friday night we have Nevada and it’s homecoming. Again, we are going to match up with a 3A school, sometimes 4A. And they are going to be a big physical football team.
They are just as big as Eldon and just as physical. We are going to have to buckle those chin straps and dig in this week. We are going to have kids who do not have a lot of Friday night experience out on the field. We will start a freshman quarterback, Kason Schwalm. We are going to have a good week of practice and get them ready to go.
It’s only week 4 and our goal is to win the district. We have three weeks before we get to district play. So, we want to make sure we are healthy for districts. I don’t want to try to win a game against Nevada and lose those guys for the rest of the year. I’d rather try to get them healthy and make sure we have them for the end of the season.

Q. Were the injuries because they were playing a bigger team?

No, Tanner Hixson has had this ankle. It’s been a recurring injury. A kid fell on him and it twisted again. Same thing with Brendan. On Mays, that ding was just a poor tackling technique. He should have hit it low and it was pretty much helmet-to-helmet.

We have homecoming this week parade Friday at 2:45 afternoon. We encourage everyone to come out and support the team.

Stats for the game included:

The Mustangs scored with 10:20 left in the first quarter on a three-yard run. PAT was good. 7-0 Mustangs. With 6:44 left in the first, they scored again on a 66-yard punt return. NEVC plays in Thomas Jefferson Tournament

NEVC competed in the Thomas Jefferson Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 17, in Joplin.

Coach Teresa Lyness: For their first non-conference all-day tournament experience for the NEVC girls they performed great.  We used beginning pool play  to try some different starting line-up combinations and to give younger players a little  playing time.   We lost our first pool match to Pleasant Hope 0-2.

After that it was “game on” resulting in splitting our second pool match with Thomas Jefferson. That earned us second place in our pool, which led us to bracket play meeting the Purple Pool third seat McAuley Catholic.  The girls played well and defeated McAuley in 2 sets 25-21 and 25-15.

Then we played the Purple Pool first seed, Exeter.  Exeter had some good servers but it was their powerful hitting game that took us out.  NEVC, though out matched, did not give up or become overwhelmed, they fought to the end giving Exeter a competitive match yet eventually succumbing to them 17-25 and 15-25.

I am real proud of the girls.  This gave us a wonderful opportunity to try new things, such as the Libero position.  First time as Libero, Senior Crystal Bogardus, convinced me of the value of the position and that she can make it work well for us.

There were lots of outstanding plays. Some of the top stats for the tournament overall were:  Camille Buttorf 9 kills, Erin Kittsmiller led both serving aces and serving receptions with 11 and 19, respectively, Christanne Middleton 12 digs, Spencer Hoagland 10 assists.

Hume Hornets sting NEVC Lady Knights

The NEVC Lady Knights hosted the Hume Hornets in volleyball action Tuesday night. NEVC lost both sets 25/5 and 25/12.

“Hume has a great volleyball team but we didn’t play up to our skill or potential,” said Assistant Coach Kelly Bell.

NEVC travels to Joplin for tournament play Saturday.
